Os tropeços dos brasileiros costumam estar nos detalhes: a preposição depois do superlativo (in the world, e não of the world), o artigo the e a diferença entre most people e the most.

Formação: the + -est ou the most

As regras espelham as do comparativo:

  • Uma sílaba: the + adjetivo + -est (the cheapest, the tallest). As regras de ortografia são as mesmas: large → the largest, big → the biggest.
  • Duas sílabas terminadas em -y: the + -iest (the easiest, the busiest).
  • Demais palavras de duas sílabas ou mais: the most + adjetivo (the most modern, the most beautiful).

AdjetivoComparativoSuperlativo

  • This is the cheapest restaurant in the neighborhood.
  • January is the hottest month here.Janeiro é o mês mais quente aqui.
  • She is the most famous singer in the country.Ela é a cantora mais famosa do país.

Superlativos irregulares e the least

good / wellbetterthe best

  • That was the best concert I've ever been to.Aquele foi o melhor show a que eu já fui.
  • Monday is the worst day of the week.Segunda é o pior dia da semana.
  • This is the least expensive option.Esta é a opção menos cara.

In ou of depois do superlativo?

  • in + lugar ou grupo/organização: in the world, in Brazil, in my family, in the class, in the company.
  • of + período de tempo ou um conjunto de itens, frequentemente com número ou all: of the year, of my life, of the three, of all.
Use inUse of
the tallest building in the worldthe best day of my life
the oldest student in the classthe coldest month of the year
the biggest city in Brazilthe youngest of the three brothers
the best player in the teamthe most important of all
  • São Paulo is the largest city in South America.São Paulo é a maior cidade da América do Sul.
  • It was the happiest day of my life.

  • One of the + superlativo + substantivo no plural: one of the best players.
  • Intensificadores: by far (de longe) e easily reforçam o superlativo: by far the best. Para ordinal: the second largest, the third most popular.
  • This is the most delicious cake I've ever eaten.
  • Pelé is one of the greatest players in history.
  • It's by far the most popular app in the country.É de longe o aplicativo mais popular do país.
  • Rio is the second largest city in Brazil.O Rio é a segunda maior cidade do Brasil.

Igualdade: as + adjetivo + as

  • Modificadores: just as (tão... quanto, exatamente), almost / nearly as (quase tão), twice as, three times as (duas vezes mais, três vezes mais).
  • Com substantivos: as much + incontável, as many + contável plural: as much time as, as many friends as.
  • Expressões fixas: as soon as possible (o mais rápido possível), as far as I know (até onde eu sei).
  • My daughter is as tall as me now.
  • The sequel is just as good as the original.A continuação é tão boa quanto o original.
  • This phone costs twice as much as that one.Este celular custa o dobro daquele.
  • Please reply as soon as possible.Por favor, responda o mais rápido possível.

Desigualdade: not as...as

  • The bus is slower than the subway. (comparativo de superioridade)
  • The bus is less fast than the subway. (possível, mas pouco natural)
  • The bus isn't as fast as the subway. (a forma mais natural)
  • The second season isn't as interesting as the first.A segunda temporada não é tão interessante quanto a primeira.
  • I don't earn as much as my sister.Eu não ganho tanto quanto a minha irmã.
  • It wasn't as cold as we expected.Não fez tanto frio quanto esperávamos.

Exceções e casos especiais

Possessivos substituem o the

Quando há um possessivo (my, your, Brazil's, the company's), ele ocupa o lugar do the. Não se usa os dois juntos.

  • She is my best friend.Ela é a minha melhor amiga.
  • Brazil's biggest export is soy.O maior produto de exportação do Brasil é a soja.

Most sem the: "a maioria" ou "muito"

Most + substantivo, sem the, significa "a maioria": most people, most Brazilians. Se houver um determinante depois, usa-se most of: most of the people, most of my friends. Nunca se diz the most of the people. E em registro formal, most + adjetivo sem the significa "muito, extremamente": It was most kind of you.

  • Most people prefer to work from home.
  • Most of my friends live in Recife.

Advérbios no superlativo: the é opcional

  • Who runs (the) fastest in your family?Quem corre mais rápido na sua família?
  • Of all the candidates, she answered the most confidently.

The most of the people agree.

Most people agree. / Most of the people agree.
